Acid rain has been shown to have adverse impacts on forests, freshwaters and soils, killing off insect and aquatic lifeforms as well as causing damage to buildings and having possible impacts on human health.
A wind turbine works the opposite of a fan. Instead of using electricity to make wind, like a fan, wind turbines use wind to make electricity.
The wind turns the blades, which spin a shaft, which connects to a generator and makes electricity
C1/C2 Level - Additional Learning Exercise
Pressure Group:
Any group that exerts pressure upon government officials and the public through lobbies, propaganda, etc. in order to affect legislation or policies.
President Clinton faced pressure from both logging groups and environmentalists when the loggers wanted parts of Washington State opened to them whereas the environment groups protested that rare species found there were likely to become even rarer. A compromise that satisfied both groups was arrived at : some logging, but stronger protection for those areas not opened to logging.
EXERCISE
Please read about a Swiss environmental pressure group - The Basel-based Bruno Manser Fund (BMF) and consider the alternative approaches in Switzerland, the USA and the UK to the effectiveness of such groups.
The Global Fire Monitoring Centre provides access to near-real-time reports on the status of forest and wildfires around the world,
Verb Use
- Over 50% of the original rainforest in Costa Rica has been cut down.
- We need to protect the rainforest because over twenty-five percent of medicines owe their existence to plants from the rainforest.
- Switzerland has no sea to dump things in like other countries. A waste crisis was detected over 20 years ago which led to every option for disposing of waste being explored. The Swiss recycle over 30% of their waste, composting another 11% and burning 45% to make energy. The ash from the incinerators is recycled as hardcore for roads and construction. The remainder of the rubbish a mere 10 to 15% is buried.
