Presenting And Explaining Information
To describe the difference in the data and to make a comparison :

  • to rise
  • to increase
  • to improve
  • to fall
  • to decrease
  • to recover

When describing the amount of change or difference in the figures from one year to the next :

  • slight,  slightly,  very small,  marginal, steadily
  • sharp,  sudden,  large,  unexpected,  rapidly
  • dramatic,  sudden,  very large, unexpected,
  • steady,  regular
  • drop,  reduction

Trends can be described more fully by adding words and phrases such as:

A general statement to use as a starting point for describing trends is:

As the (FIRST VARIABLE) increased/decreased, the (SECOND VARIABLE) increased/decreased/stayed constant

As the profits dipped in Q1 we then saw a dramatic rise in Q4 as the cost cutting measures took effect.

The historical data of 2000 is still relevant today because it highlights the ongoing seasonal fluctuation in our business.

Other word use :

  • the underlying trend shows
  • the data suggests
  • the impact
  • there is an improvement
  • the supply issue bottomed out
  • then we went into turnaround
  • implies that in the near future
  • the data confirms
  • profit rebounded back to historic levels

Delinquency and foreclosure rates are rising on subprime mortgages. A recent survey by the Mortgage Bankers Association found that 223,000 households had subprime loans in foreclosure in the third quarter of 2006 (about 3.86% of subprime loans), and about 12.5% of all outstanding subprime loans were delinquent. These trends are raising concerns among industry analysts, regulators and especially in the U.S. Congress and various state legislatures.

US demand to reach 4.2 billion pounds in 2011 US demand for reinforced plastics is projected to increase nearly three percent yearly to 4.2 billion pounds in 2011, reaching $8.1 billion.

The state's economic recovery broadened in 2006, boosted by a rebounding technology sector and renewed strength of some of Massachusetts's oldest companies and industries. This year's Globe 100 reflects this expansion, with a diverse mix of old- and new-economy firms among the state's best-performing, publicly held companies.

A 113-year-old construction firm, Perini Corp. of Framingham, leads the list, while the 155-year-old Springfield gun maker, Smith & Wesson Holding Corp., vaulted into the Top 10. At the same time, 20 companies broke into The Globe 100 for the first time, the largest class of newcomers since 2002

Perini Corp., for example, slumped badly after the real estate collapse of the 1990s, but climbed back by refocusing on high-end specialty construction and finding a niche in booming casino development

The unexpected jump in mortgage costs will cause further misery for the million households expected to renew their home loan in the coming months.

The traditional pie chart is always a good fail safe. Is it easy to make and explain data comparisons?

Line graphs are often the simplest type of graph used to display data.

This graph, from ''Baseball's All-Time Best Sluggers,'' depicts the variation in home-run totals among American major-league baseball players since the late 1800s.

The higher the line, the greater the spread between the leading home-run hitter and the average hitter. (The lower the line, the more similar players' home-run totals.)

Schell says you would expect the variation to have increased in recent years if steroids gave some players an unfair advantage. But it hasn't: Players' home-run totals are more alike than ever.

A scatterplot shows the scores on one variable plotted against scores on a second variable. This example is a plot showing the relationship between grip strength and arm strength for 147 people working at physically-demanding jobs.

The histogram is a popular graphing tool. It is used to summarize discrete or continuous data that are measured on an interval scale.
